Volcafe in Costa Rica receives recognition for supporting children in coffee-growing communities

Volcafe has been awarded with the "Protectores de la Niñez 2026" (“Protectors of Childhood 2026”) distinction by Costa Rica's National Childcare and Development Network (REDCUDI), recognising the sustained contribution of our Costa Rica entity to the protection and fostering of children through the Casas de la Alegría initiative. The award was presented on 17 July 2026.

Casas de la Alegría is a community-based programme that provides childcare and support services for the children of seasonal coffee harvest workers during the harvest period. By offering a safe and nurturing environment, the initiative helps families access employment opportunities while ensuring that children receive care, nutrition, and age-appropriate activities.

Overtime, the programme has become a recognised model for improving living and working conditions for migrant families involved in coffee production. Through collaboration between coffee millers and exporters, public institutions and development partners, Casas de la Alegría has expanded its reach and strengthened support for some of the most vulnerable families in coffee-growing regions.
Each year, thousands of migrant workers travel to Costa Rica's coffee-producing areas for the harvest season, often accompanied by their children. Initiatives such as Casas de la Alegría help address the challenges these families face, including child labour, by promoting child protection, access to care and dignified working conditions.

The recognition from REDCUDI highlights the impact that partnerships across the coffee sector can have beyond the farm gate. It also reflects a shared commitment to supporting coffee-growing communities holistically and creating opportunities for future generations.

While the award celebrates an important achievement, its greatest significance lies in the children and families who benefit from the programme each year. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to child protection and to creating safer conditions for migrant families in coffee-growing regions.
